Juana Molina - Un día

"Cuando tengo una pequeña idea, antes de tocarla aunque sea una vez, pongo en marcha el grabador. Porque siempre sé que va a haber una cosa que va a ser un error, porque no sé muy bien adónde ir y porque no sé muy bien cómo volver: y estoy segura que con todo eso se va a armar algo que me va a gustar. Y después trato de hacer que eso tenga una letra que le vaya a esa melodía, y que se enganche armónicamente con esto y con aquello. Nueva entrega de Juana Molina, heroína del rock argentino. Juana ha sido favorita para mí desde que la escuché por primera vez. Entrar en su mundo es una experiencia única, puede fácilmente alejarte de las obsesiones banales de cualquier mal día. Moderna e impredecible.

Tristemente ha sido catalogada dentro del fastidioso género World Music, sólo por provenir de un país con PIB per capita por debajo de 20 mil dólares al año, cuando realmente no es música tradicional, sino de vanguardia. Aunque mantiene influencias del folclor latinoamericano, este recurso es utilizado sin fetichismos, empleado del mismo modo en que Juana incorpora sintetizadores a sus arreglos o abre su espectro vocal sin atender a las complacencias, encauzada más bien a la experimentación, a la hipnosis: pop en su propia definición.

En el corte Un Buen Día, resalta la letra, no porque la música no sea importante, de hecho lo es incluso dentro de una ya importante discografía, pero las primeras veces que escuché a Juana no imaginé la clase de cosas que trataba en su lírica, pensaba que hablaba más de amor y de introspección, menos del entorno o de su familia, así que llama mi atención esa impresión de que en ella hay depositada una inquietud al respecto: "Un día voy a cantar las canciones sin letras y cada uno podrá imaginar si hablo de amor o desilusión, banalidades o sobre Platón, si hablo de vos o de color, si hablo de música nuestra pasión"

Antony and the Johnsons - Shake That Devil

Excelente es el nuevo EP de Antony and the Johnsons, Another World.
Originalmente me parecía muy forzada la forma de cantar de Antony Hegarty y el disco Antony and the Johnsons llegó a mis manos sólo porque había recibido excelentes críticas. Antes había escuchado a Antony participar en el disco Noah's Ark de CocoRosie y honestamente me parecía que su interpretación estorbaba.
No obstante, un día algo ocurrió: la voz de Antony, los arreglos y la ambigüedad de las letras tocó una fibra muy sensible, la misma que fue alcanzada por Richard Hawley, Le Mans y Sufjan Stevens en su momento. Ahora es un esencial en mi colección.
Del EP Another World la pieza que más me sorprendió es Shake That Devil. La primera parte es sutil, prácticamente a capella, básicamente recitada. A los dos minutos y veintiséis segundos la batería rompe la sutileza y el resultado del exorcismo se manifiesta: baile y espíritus chocarreros.
Sería una maravilla que vinieran a la Cuidad de México, mejor el Lunario que el Metropolitan, ¿Sala Nezahualcóyotl?.

The Magnetic Fields - I Don't Want To Get Over You

Del insuperable y muy entretenido 69 Love Songs. Tal como el título sugiere, este álbum incluye sesenta y nueve canciones de amor contenidas en tres discos, todas compuestas por el brillante Stephin Merrit, responsable de los proyectos musicales Future Bible Heroes, The 6ths, The Gothic Archies y por supuesto The Magnetic Fields.
Aparentemente Merritt se arrepintió de no haber conseguido otro cantante para esta canción, sobre lo cual argumenta: "My voice always says, I Don't Want to Get Over You, I could sing Zip-A-Dee-Doo-Dah and you'd remember it as I Don't Want to Get Over You..."A pesar de esto la letra es escandalosamente acertada, al igual que el resto del proyecto.

Grizzly Bear - He Hit Me (It Felt Like A Kiss)

Grabada originalmente por The Crystals en 1962 bajo la producción de Phil Spector. Fue escrita por Gerry Goffin y Carole King tras descubrir que la cantante Little Eva era golpeada regularmente por su novio. Eva justificaba con naturalidad el maltrato, argumentando que éste era motivado por el gran amor que él sentía por ella.

Aunque la canción se escribió como protesta contra el abuso hacia las mujeres, fue interpretada por la audiencia justo al revés —además de que el tema parecía demasiado fuerte para una canción pop— por lo que no duró mucho tiempo en la radio y al final resultó un fracaso comercial. Se sabe que incluso las integrantes de The Crystals odiaban la canción, pero de alguna forma Spector logró convencerlas de grabarla y lanzarla como sencillo.

En esta versión Grizzly Bear —excelentísima banda de Brooklyn— lleva la tensión de la versión original un poco más lejos, respetando la letra y acentuando el ritmo casi fúnebre. Incluida en el Friend EP de 2007. La original puede encontrarse en casi cualquier recopilación de The Crystals o Phil Spector.

Silvestre Revueltas - Homenaje a García Lorca (Baile)

Del grandísimo de Santiago Papasquiaro, Durango, celebrando las fiestas patrias.

Baile es la primera de tres partes que componen el Homenaje a García Lorca, una de las mejores obras orquestales de Revueltas. Escrita en 1936 tras la muerte del poeta y estrenada en el Palacio de Bellas Artes el 14 de noviembre del mismo año bajo el nombre provisional de Tres piezas para diez instrumentos.

Pieza notablemente festiva para ser un réquiem, ha sido entendida por los especialistas como una representación del sentido del humor mexicano —o del sentido del humor del propio Revueltas— para enfrentar la muerte.

En este caso, la ejecución corre a cargo de la New Philarmonia Orchestra, dirigida por el maestro Eduardo Mata durante la conmemoración del centenario del nacimiento del duranguense.

LCD Soundsystem - Someone Great

La música de esta canción está tomada de la tercera parte del disco 45:33, encargo de Nike a James Murphy para preparar una pieza musical como acompañamiento del entrenamiento de un corredor. La descripción era algo así como "...to reward and push at good intervals of a run". Alguna vez la probé y, como no corro tanto, sólo me sirvió por media hora.

Posiblemente el título trata de jugar un poco con el 4:33 de John Cage, sólo que en realidad 45:33 dura más que 45 minutos y 33 segundos y, desde luego, es infinitamente más ruidosa que la pieza de Cage. Probablemente tiene más que ver con el 45 y 33 RPM de las tornamesas.

Sobre esta base musical, Murphy montó una interesante letra sobra la pérdida de una persona, aunque no precisamente desde una perspectiva romántica.
Incluida en el Sound Of Silver, uno de mis favoritos del 2007, creo que la mejor del disco.

TV on the Radio - Love Dog

Los de Brooklyn, nuevamente encendiendo la máquina electro-soul-rock en su LP más reciente, Dear Science.
Montados en la misma línea que trabajos anteriores —capas de sonidos, cohesión de influencias y ritmos— han buscado complementar el concepto con más experimentación, free jazz y doo wop; guiños que van desde el Michael Jackson de Off The Wall hasta el Sonic Youth de EVOL.
A mi gusto, una de las bandas más interesantes de la actualidad, junto con Bon Iver, Tricky y Portishead, uno de los mejores discos en lo que va del año.

Antony and the Johnsons - Mysteries of Love

Los fans de David Lynch reconocerán de inmediato esta canción. En efecto, es la que aparece en la película Blue Velvet, en voz de Julee Cruise.

La letra fue escrita por el mismo Lynch y la música es de Angelo Badalamenti. La versión original se puede encontrar en Floating into the Night de Julee Cruise y por supuesto en el Soundtrack de Blue Velvet.

Lynch escribió esta canción con Badalamenti como alternativa a la imposibilidad legal y económica para utilizar Song to the Siren de This Mortal Coil.

Esta extraordinaria versión de Antony, de quien soy muy devoto, aparece en su EP I Fell in Love with a Dead Boy del 2001.
